Successful athletes typically have goal-setting efforts that pay more attention to the little goals than to the goal about winning. All athletes indicate a desire to win, but setting the smaller process goals that get you to that win is the crucial difference.1

Mental training skills have greater influence on outcomes as the competitive level increases. The differences between first and second place senior skaters are not typically the physical skills, but rather who is able to utilize mental skills to help themselves execute and focus on their performance at the right time.2
